Homemade Chicken-Style Bouillon

Homemade Chicken-Style Bouillon

I’m starting my homemade pantry series with Chicken-Style Bouillon, and I’ll be honest — this wasn’t actually the first one I planned to share.

The real reason this recipe is going up first is… kind of silly.

I was completely out of two of my main ingredients for another pantry staple I make all the time, and somehow managed to forget to grab them at the store. So instead of overthinking it or scrapping the plan altogether, I went with what I could make right then — and honestly, I’m glad I did.

Because this one?

It’s simple, versatile, and something I reach for constantly.

Why Make Your Own Bouillon?

Store-bought bouillon cubes and powders are convenient, but they’re also one of those pantry items where the ingredient list can get long… fast.

Have you ever actually read the ingredient list on a chicken bouillon cube — especially the generic store-brand ones? I couldn’t tell you what most of that stuff even is, let alone why it’s in there.

Making your own version lets you:

  • Control exactly what goes in it
  • Adjust salt and seasoning to your taste
  • Skip additives you don’t need
  • Keep a flexible seasoning on hand for everyday cooking

This Chicken-Style Bouillon is a replacement for traditional chicken bouillon — same cozy, savory flavor, just made with pantry spices and nutritional yeast instead of actual chicken.

What Makes This “Chicken-Style”?

There’s no chicken in this recipe, but the combination of nutritional yeast, herbs, garlic, onion, and salt creates that familiar, savory depth we associate with chicken broth.

It’s the kind of flavor that works whether you’re:

  • Making a quick mug of broth
  • Cooking rice or grains
  • Adding depth to soups or stews
  • Seasoning vegetables or potatoes

Think of it as a multi-purpose pantry seasoning that also happens to turn into broth when you need it.

Chicken-Style Bouillon Recipe

Ingredients

  • Nutritional yeast
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Parsley
  • Dill
  • Turmeric
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Rosemary
  • Salt

Instructions

Mix everything together and store it in an airtight container. That’s it. No cooking, no drying, no extra steps.

How to Use It

  • To make broth: Mix 1 tablespoon of the bouillon powder with 8 oz hot water. Feel free to dilute it more or less depending on how strong you like your broth.
  • As a seasoning: Sprinkle it into soups, rice, vegetables, or anywhere you’d normally use bouillon or broth for flavor.

A quick note on the salt:

Two tablespoons might sound like a lot at first, but remember — that salt is spread out across the entire mixture. You’re only using a small amount at a time. That said, if you’re sensitive to salt or just prefer less, feel free to reduce it and adjust to your taste.

Why I’m Starting Here

Even though this wasn’t the recipe I originally planned to share first, it feels like the right place to start.

This bouillon is:

  • Much easier to store than boxed or canned chicken broth
  • Simple enough to make
  • Uses ingredients I already have on hand

It’s one of those recipes that quietly makes everyday cooking easier — and those are exactly the kinds of staples I want to build first.
