Tacos are an easy Monday night staple in our house. They’re quick, everyone eats them without complaint, and most of the time I already have everything I need.
For years, that meant using the little pre-made taco seasoning packets from the store. They worked, but once I started paying attention to ingredients and sodium, I realized they weren’t really adding anything special — especially for something we make so often.
What surprised me most was realizing I already kept all the spices needed to make taco seasoning at home. Once I mixed it up for the first time, it quickly became one of those pantry staples I reach for without thinking.
A Practical Pantry Staple
I keep this seasoning mixed up in a small jar in my pantry so it’s ready whenever taco night rolls around. When it’s time to cook, I just scoop out a few tablespoons and season the meat as it cooks — no packets and no extra steps.
It’s simple, flexible, and easy to adjust depending on how much you’re making. Because it’s already mixed and ready to go, it doesn’t feel any harder than using a store-bought option.
This is exactly the kind of pantry swap I love: realistic, low effort, and something that actually gets used. A small change that makes everyday meals a little easier and a little better.
If you’re trying to build a more practical pantry — one that actually gets used — this is a great place to start.

A Small Step That Makes a Big Difference
This seasoning might seem like a small change, but it’s one of those swaps that adds up — fewer processed ingredients, less sodium, and one less thing to remember at the store.
It also opened the door for me to start making other pantry staples at home using ingredients I already had — and I’ll be sharing more of those simple recipes as I go.
