Homemade Miracle Whip (Copycat)

Homemade Miracle Whip (Copycat)

A sweet and tangy homemade Miracle Whip copycat made with simple ingredients and blended together in under a minute.

If I had to choose between mayonnaise and Miracle Whip, I’ve always been firmly on Team Miracle Whip.

There’s just something about that sweet, tangy flavor that makes sandwiches, potato salad, and pasta salad taste better. Mayo is fine… but it just doesn’t have that same zip.

This homemade Miracle Whip copycat recipe recreates that classic sweet and tangy flavor using simple ingredients you can make right in your own kitchen.

The problem with the store-bought version is the ingredient list.

When you actually read the label, it’s full of things I’d rather not keep in my kitchen — corn syrup, preservatives, and other highly processed ingredients.

So I started experimenting with homemade versions.

Some were too oily, some were too vinegar-heavy, and a few just didn’t taste right at all.

But this one finally hit that sweet, creamy, tangy balance I was looking for. It’s the closest I’ve gotten to the flavor I grew up with — and honestly, I think I might like it even more than the store-bought version.

Simple ingredients. No corn syrup. No strange additives. Just real food that tastes right.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup light olive oil (this gave me the best flavor, though avocado oil works too)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1–2 tablespoons honey (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a wide-mouth jar, including the oil.
  2. Place an immersion blender in the jar.
  3. Blend until the mixture emulsifies and thickens into a creamy dressing.

That’s it. The mixture quickly turns into a thick, spreadable dressing with the same sweet and tangy flavor profile Miracle Whip is known for.

Storage

Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator and use within 5–7 days.

Because this version is made with simple ingredients and no preservatives, it won’t last as long as the store-bought kind — but that’s part of the trade-off when choosing real ingredients.

Ways to Use Homemade Miracle Whip

This works anywhere you’d normally use Miracle Whip:

  • sandwiches
  • potato salad
  • pasta salad
  • egg salad
  • deviled eggs
  • burger sauce

Anywhere you want that sweet tangy kick.

A Simple Pantry Swap

One of the things I’ve been enjoying most about building a more practical pantry is realizing how many everyday staples are actually easy to make at home.

Recipes like this let you keep the flavors you love — in this case that classic sweet and tangy Miracle Whip taste — while using simple ingredients instead of corn syrup and preservatives.

It’s a small change, but swaps like this add up over time.

And once you start making a few of these pantry staples yourself, it becomes easier to replace more of the jars and packets in your kitchen with simple homemade versions.

If you’re working on stocking a more practical pantry, you might also enjoy some of the other homemade staples I’ve been sharing, like taco seasoning, ranch mix, dry bouillon, and brownie mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does homemade Miracle Whip taste like the store-bought version?

This recipe is designed to mimic the sweet and tangy flavor of classic Miracle Whip, but with simple ingredients. After testing several versions, this one came the closest to the flavor I grew up with — and honestly, I think it tastes even better.

Can I use avocado oil instead of olive oil?

Yes. Avocado oil works well in this recipe. However, during testing I found that light olive oil produced the most balanced flavor. Some oils can make homemade spreads taste too oily, so using a mild oil helps keep the flavor closer to the original.

How long does homemade Miracle Whip last?

Because this recipe uses simple ingredients and no preservatives, it should be stored in the refrigerator and used within 5–7 days.

What can I use homemade Miracle Whip for?

You can use it anywhere you would normally use the store-bought version, including:

sandwiches potato salad pasta salad egg salad deviled eggs

It adds the same sweet and tangy flavor Miracle Whip is known for.
